Multi-Factor Authentication for FileMaker
BeginnerMFA options available for FileMaker solutions -- what the platform supports natively and how to extend it via external IdPs.
What you'll learn
- Why FileMaker local accounts do not support MFA
- MFA via OAuth/SAML identity providers
- Claris ID MFA for FileMaker Cloud
- Building a custom MFA layer in on-premises solutions
FileMaker does not have built-in MFA for local accounts. To get MFA, you must route authentication through an identity provider that supports it -- Claris ID (for FileMaker Cloud), Microsoft Entra with Conditional Access, or a SAML IdP with MFA enforced. Understanding the options and their constraints is critical for security-conscious deployments.
No MFA for local accounts
FileMaker local account authentication is username + password only -- there is no second factor. There is no OTP, no push notification, no hardware key support. If you need MFA for local accounts, you must either migrate to an external authentication provider or build a custom solution.
