Backup Encryption and Secure Backup Storage
IntermediateProtect FileMaker backups so a stolen backup file does not become a data breach.
What you'll learn
- FileMaker Server backup configuration and encryption
- Off-site backup security considerations
- Testing backup restoration in a secure environment
- Backup retention policy as a security control
A backup is a copy of your database. If the backup is unencrypted and stored in an accessible location, a person who obtains the backup file has a full copy of your data -- bypassing every privilege set, account restriction, and network control on the live server. Backup security is an extension of data security.

FileMaker Server backup encryption
FileMaker Server backups are copies of the .fmp12 files. If database-level encryption is enabled on the live file, the backup is also encrypted (it is a byte-for-byte copy of the encrypted file). If database encryption is not enabled, the backup is a cleartext copy. Enable database encryption first; this automatically secures backups.
